What leadership means to Lauren September 2, 2009

“The values and frameworks that underpin my leadership capabilities have developed from an understanding that it is not my academic qualifications that make me a good leader; it is who I am and the personal beliefs I have that define my leadership skills.

To be a good leader, I believe that you need something more than the traditional strong personality that prompts others to follow your directions. I believe a good leader requires a sense of honesty, loyalty and commitment, someone with a good heart and vision to pursue the right course of action with integrity and passion. I believe that a good leader does not talk down to others. Throughout history, true leaders are those who have had the ability to inspire others. It is not just smart rhetoric and engaging points of view that capture people; those with a determination to follow dreams with a sense of honesty, loyalty and respect for others will be strong enough to lead and carry on despite any hardships or disappointments along the way. From a student’s perspective, I have had the opportunity to listen to leaders and be a leader myself. These important aspects, including faith in people and faith in myself, and knowing that a leader never stops learning, are qualities that shape and define my leadership skills.” Lauren, VU Law Student
