LOL- So this has been around for awhile, but was recently introduced to it by a friend at Choir. No more crazy running to catch the next train from Williamstown Beach to the city… It self updates if running late!

Metlink’s iPhone app gives you scheduled departures for trains, trams and buses throughout Victoria, wherever you are.

From 9 June 2009, iPhone users have been able to download the application for free from the iTunes Store.

The app has been downloaded well over 63,000 times and is currently rated as the fourth most popular free travel app in the iTunes Store behind Google Earth, Urban Spoon and Kayak Flight and Hotel Search.

Metlink has a new version of its iPhone app available for download from the iTunes Store.

The new version, approved by the app store this week, is a fix that addresses how iPhones with 3.0 operating systems installed handles dates. In some circumstances the old version displayed the wrong day’s service information.

For the new version to work please ensure the date format is set to ‘Australia’.

Features of the app include:

  • Fully fledged journey planner: Get the power of Metlink’s multi mode journey planner on your phone. Simply specify a departure and arrival location and the app does the rest.
  • Favourites: Save your regular stops for quick access to departure and arrival information.
  • Live tram information: Built in tramTRACKER® functions give you real-time departures and arrivals for all tram stops.
  • Over the air updates: Get the most up to date timetables as they are generated.
  • Search for stops: Find your closest stops, searching by name, line, suburb or ID.
  • Find nearby stops: Out and about somewhere new? Find your closest stops via GPS.
  • Timetables: Browse all timetables by travel mode and line.
  • Alterations: View live scheduled and unscheduled service alterations for the entire network.
  • Network map: Pinch and drag around the network with built in maps.

All timetables are stored locally on your phone, so it uses none of your data pack / cap when using offline departures. Only requesting over the air updates from the online journey planner, alterations and tramTRACKER® use your data. We recommend updating the timetables using the over the air feature while on a WiFi network for both speed and data usage reasons.

A user guide is available. See Using Metlink’s iPhone app

Also available for iPhone is the free tramTRACKER® app which provides real-time tram arrival information – details at yarratrams.com.au

We are constantly trying to improve the App so if you find any problem please let us know. You can contact Metlink through the ‘Feedback’ button in the iTunes Store, or directly email iphone@metlinkmelbourne.com.au
